Vogue: Tales of a Broke Male Model

Sharing is Caring!

My parents want me to do something practical, meaningful, esteemed, and full of security, like law school or graduate school.

You must be level-headed in order to make it big in the entertainment industry, without a strong sense of self, your soul can be crushed very easily.

The industry builds you up today and tears you down tomorrow.

The talent agents will dissect every part of your appearance and personality. There's no such thing as sacred in the world of fashion, photography, or entertainment.

From the outside looking in, people probably assume that the industry is glamorous and exciting.
It's not.

You can send dozens of photos to the agents and still never book a gig. It all depends on what the clients are after. As a result, you can't quit your day job.

It sounds silly, but modeling is challenging. It's not neuroscience, true. However, it's difficult for anyone who lacks a great deal of emotional intelligence.

For anyone who is naturally reserved, anxious, or shy.

The direction can be spotty depending on the level of expertise that the photographer possesses. Certain looks, or emotions conveyed on film are so fleeting.

If the photographer misses an excellent pose and the model isn't skilled enough to re-create that moment, then the whole shoot is compromised.

Before I started doing this thing, I used to think it was easy.

But, the people that made it look easy were "super-," hot, well-trained models.

There's a lot of superstition when it comes to selection, many unwarranted assumptions.

Modeling is not rational.

The agents, photographers, and models employ their feelings much more than concrete facts.

Photographers are some of the most self-conscious people in the world.

And models are terribly insecure.

Many models enjoy the night life, "networking with the aid of alcohol" and being very social, but I come from a very conservative, religious upbringing and these sorts of things just don't appeal to me.

My friends jokingly refer to me these days as grandpa.
